There is evidence of the exploitation of deposits in the area of Mazarron already in Roman times. In the 19th century, the mining industry reappeared in this town located in the south east of Spain in the province of Murcia. Carried by foreign investment, the town grew rapidly. But at the beginning of the 20th century, the mining industry began to decline. The price of lead dropped and the veins were exhausted. The Spanish Civil War impacted the economy. The place was abandoned in the 60's and left to the mercy of the elements. Today, the landscape still bears the mark of this exploitation. Ruins of buildings, flaming puddles and cracked earth give the place an apocalyptic air. A land that has become sterile and illustrates the ecological impact of human activities.
